Description of Ethnographic Thesaurus Display Formats in Downloadable Text Formats

The Ethnographic Thesaurus has two principal display formats - an alphabetic display, and a taxonomic display. In addition, a KWOC [Key Word Out of Context] Index Display search capability allows the user to obtain an alphabetical listing of every place that a specific word may be located in the thesaurus, regardless of its position in a phrase or reference.

Alphabetic Display

The alphabetic display is a full traditional thesaurus format. For each Ethnographic Thesaurus term, the display includes appropriate Scope Notes (SN), if necessary, to clarify how a term is used in the thesaurus; Used For references (UF) to indicate synonyms or similar terms that are non-preferred terms; Broader Terms (BT); Narrower Terms (NT); and Related Terms (RT) that provide cross-references to other facets.

Example of alphabetic display format:

TALL TALES
SN	Fictional narratives that begin as narratives
told as true but in which the exaggerations slowly
increase until the story is no longer believable.
	UF	LIARS TALES
	BT	FOLK NARRATIVES
	RT	LIAR'S CONTESTS (Ldgb)

Taxonomic Display

The taxonomic display lists terms in the order of their conceptual significance using an alphabetic notational code which displays the hierarchy within subject categories, and includes all of the features of the full alphabetic display, including scope notes, where necessary, as well as Used for (UF) and Related term (RT) references. Broader term (BT) and Narrower term (NT) relationships are implicit in the taxonomic arrangement. A taxonomic thesaurus display format is sometimes also referred to as a hierarchical display.

Example of taxonomic display format (in truncated form without scope notes and all references to show taxonomic hierarchy; for full reference structure with scope notes, search "legends" in the ET):

Lhlhb etiological tales
		SN	Fictional tales of origins.
		UF	aetiological tales
		BT	tales by category
		NT	natursage
		NT	pourquoi stories

Lhk tall tales
SN Fictional narratives that begin as narratives
told as true but in which the exaggerations
slowly increase until the story is no longer
               believable.
            UF liars tales
            UF lying tales
            UF windies
            UF yarns
            RT liars contests
            RT lie telling
            RT talking trash

KWOC Index Display

The KWOC (Key Word Out of Context) Index Display, also called Rotated KWOC Display, is a vital cross-reference and searching tool. It displays, in alphabetical order, every significant word of every term or phrase in the Ethnographic Thesaurus regardless of the word's position in a term or phrase, and regardless of its context in the thesaurus. Non-content words included in preferred terms or phrases, such as "the" or "of" are eliminated in the KWOC display.

Example:

FOLDING
	folding beds
	folding chairs
	folding knives
	paper folding
